Ferry to Ferry Walk

Tags: film portra160 21mm

Another weekend, another photo walk! This past Sunday, my friend Alex and I came up with the concept of Ferry to Ferry: starting at the SF Ferry Building and ending up at the Sausalito Ferry terminal and riding a ferry back to the city.

I am thrilled to report the walk was another smashing success, and we have the photos to prove it.

I loved how sharp and open the ultrawide photos have been, and I think the generous hyperfocal distance of the ultrawide lens lends itself really well to being used on walks because I can focus more on framing. I wanted to see if Portra 160 would be like a sharper version of Portra 400 and the results so far say yes!

There is a lot of repetition in the photos, especially in the middle part of the walk: another look back at the SF downtown skyline, yet another photo of the Golden Gate Bridge. If there are any haters out there, I am sorry to report that there will be many more photos of these in the future. On days with gorgeous weather like this with the fog floating in and out, moving a mile or waiting 15 minutes changes the dynamics entirely, and I love the small differences and contrasts between the shots.

Path

Our path was basically exactly according to plan. SF Ferry Building, along the Embarcadero, across the Golden Gate Bridge, over to Sausalito.

We tried to include a stop at Andytown near Jackson Square (the jog inland from the Embarcadero) but unfortunately they were not open on Sunday.

To get up to the Golden Gate Bridge, we walked on the route I only know how to describe as “the hill behind Planet Granite” which is useless because the Planet Granite climbing gym at Crissy Field has been taken over by some other gym so its name has changed.

Once we got across the bridge, I was expecting we’d walk down Alexander Ave, a common biking path that we would have to share with cars. Elisabeth guided us towards the Fort Baker Bay Trail route that went under the bridge down past Cavallo Point, I’d never been that way! It was much lower traffic so it felt much safer.

Then once we got to Sausalito, we started to continue north past the ferry terminal to hopefully stop by the farmers market. While we did have a lot of time until the ferry, we didn’t have that much time, so we doubled back and ate at a cafe directly across from the ferry.

The ferry ride back was delightful, and as a bonus we got to see both porpoises near Angel Island, and a whale spout near Treasure Island!
